The fall of WHO

The fall of WHO

It is probably for the first time in world history, people are questioning the efficacy and credibility of the World Health Organization (WHO). Since the out break of  coronavirus, questions are being asked. One million signatures have been gathered under the aegis of Change.org for the resignation of WHO Director General Tedros, is a case in point.

Never has such an uproar been witnessed against the Director of WHO. Did the organization that is responsible for the World Health Report, which carries out the survey on health concerns around the world and alert people, fail in its duty? Several countries say so and people around the world are blaming China.

Tedros

Who is Tedros?

Mr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, an Ethiopian  national and does not hold a Medical Degree. Political analysts say that China has deep rooted economic interests in Ethiopia and neighboring countries.

It was China that helped Tedros to catapult to the highest  post in WHO. Ever since, he has been in the top seat, Tedros has openly supported China on ‘One China’. China has been an obstacle for the entry of Taiwan into WHO as a member since 1971.

Tedros has been doing everything possible to bailout China. He came hard on countries imposing a ban on visitors from China. And when several countries junked Chinese masks citing lack of accuracy in protection, Tedros has been silent.

The WHO’s role is crucial as the world depends on its health reports to take rearguard action. Today, the organization has lost its credibility. The WHO is to world, for the world but not just for China. The audacity with which the WHO has been functioning prompted the Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso say, ‘Chinese Health Organization’ referring to WHO.

When countries begin to ask for an independent enquiry on the source of the Coronavirus pandemic, as was done by the Australian government, it goes to show that the WHO has lost its credibility.

The WHO is bound by the duty to provide authentic information on health issues – be it pandemic, spread of communicable diseases, for a coordinated response.

Hereafter, when a teacher starts explaining about the WHO, he will now be thinking twice. Will he or she tell students that the WHO as we knew it, is no longer as strong and reliable? We leave that to you.
